The Search, Day 1
Yesterday I met the realtor, Christie, and we went a-lookin. She scheduled 10 condos over the course of 3 hours. In one building there were a couple of other open houses and ultimately we say 12.
THE TRIVIAL
One, small talk is all the same. Every other realtor we came across greeted us with "Beautiful day today..." Yes it was and all things being equal I would have preferred being on the bike. Not that I wasn't enjoying the condo search.
Two, someone somewhere in the industry has decided that a bowl of fruit in the kitchen is a strong selling point. Every condo, and I mean every condo, we went in had a bowl of fruit on the kitchen counter, or dining room table, or breakfast bar. Oranges were popular. Bananas and limes were also well represented. Not so many apples. Not sure what the real estate industry has against Granny Smith.
THE CONDOS
After some reflection I found that I was really surprised by my impressions. Three of the twelve were just crossed off the list right away. But after getting home I sat down with a beer, laid out all the realtor sheets, and started listing pluses and minuses to each condo as I remembered them.
I found the first unit we saw, located in a building I know where a friend of a friend lives, had all negatives. I just didn't expect that. Crossed off the list.
One of the units I was looking forward to seeing because of its exact location in the end was a disappointment. While I was there I was thinking I could work with it. It had some features I really liked but ultimately, the layout just wasn't workable. I had to cross it off my list.
The top three units surprised me. Two had no central air and ultimately might rule them out but as I was walking through them they felt comfortable. They felt like it could be home. The third unit was above my upper price limit but was in a great location, was a great unit and something I would love. I just have to figure if I want to move up into that price range.
Any way, I don't have to make my decision from the frist dozen. More units will be viewed in the coming weeks.
