Today's Stat
From 2000 to 2005 federal spending went up dramatically. Andrew Sullivan, on pg 145 of his book The Conservative Soul quotes the following numbers from The Heritage Foundation.
According to the U.S. Gov't Accountability Office, the future U.S. debt, the amount of money promised to programs that would not be collected in taxes, increased from $20.4 trillion in 2000 to $43.3 trillion in 2005.
Fiscal conservatism is dead in the U.S. federal government.
- Housing and commerce spending jumped 58%
- Community and regional development rocketed up 324%
- Medicaid increased 49%
- International affairs spending increased 111%
