Armenians, Turkey, Iraq, and The Congress

A former mayor of Glendale (CA?), an Armenian, was interviewed by Chicago Public Radio this morning about the U.S. House resolution acknowledging (condeming?) the genocide of Armenians in Turkey in 1915. He wanted the resolution passed. He asked, "Why are we playing politics with this?" in critcizing the opposition.

I agree. Why is congress spending its time attempting to pass a resolution with no teeth and no funding that's only measurable affect will be cooling of relations between the U.S. and modern day Turkey? With Turkey considering sending troops into northern Iraq to do battle with our nominal allies the Kurds, why are we pushing so hard to pass a resolution that will piss off Turkey. With half of the supplies being shipped to our troops in Iraq, including a 1/3 of the fuel, being routed through Turkey why are we intentionally going to goad them?

Some people accuse Congressional Democrats of using this issue to try to force an early end to the Iraq War. I don't know if that is true or not. If it is it is a terrible way to do it. They can't/won't defeat the president on the merits of the argument -- DESPITE MAJORITY SUPPORT IN THE U.S. -- so, IN THEORY, they attempt to piss off an ally to the point they undermine our war effort. In theory, they endanger our troops by trying to get a foreign power to cut off our supply lines? I hope to hell that is not true.
