Today's Stat

20,000,000 ft3



of debris is estimated to have been produced by the Haiti earthquake last year. At this point about 5% of it is thought to have been cleared.

That's a lot of rubble, right. Right? The Law Of Big Numbers has people ooing and ahing. I'm not really sure though. It sounds like a lot but I have no concept of how big that is.

So... research!

Merchandise Mart

The Chicago Merchandise Mart has 4 million square feet of space. If you assume 10 feet per floor then the Mart could be filled with 40 million cubic feet of material. The estimated rubble in Port-au-Prince would fill up half the Mart.
