Let's Talk Baseball
First
Bonds was arguably one of the best players to ever play the game, even before he found the "weight room" at the ripe old age of 38. I can't even get too worked up about the roids. It's his testicles that are shriveling, not mine.
I was in St. Louis for the games against the Giants on Saturday and Sunday. Bonds, surprisingly, played in both games. But whatever Bonds may have been at one time he is nothing other than a bat swinger any more. Over the two games he went 0-5 with two walks, one intentional (the other probably unintentionally – intentional). And I have never, ever seen an outfielder so lazy! Twice the Giants centerfielder attempted a running, diving catch in left center field, once successfully. Neither time was Bonds ANYWHERE near the play. He would barely move more than 10 steps from where he started.
I understand he has bad knees and can’t run like he used to. I understand he 44 years old, ancient in pro sports terms. But if you can’t play the game it is time to retire.
Second
I suppose that the Home Run contest the day before the All-Star game could be compared to the Slam Dunk contest before the NBA All-Star game but I enjoy the Home Run contest a great deal. The Slam Dunk contest, in my mind, has become boring. We've seen it all.
Anyway, last nights HR contest was very entertaining. Alex Rios, who I've never really heard of before, had a monsterous second round! And what a beautiful swing he has: fluid and effortless. Vlad Guerrero didn't hit as many but hit some HUGE shots. One was measured at 503 feet!! I don't know if I could hit a ball that far with two swings. Pujols made a strong effort in the 2nd round but started one HR down and couldn't quite make it.
The last round was anti-climatic with Vlad winning 3-2, but the display put on through the first two rounds was incredible.
Third
The stupidest thing baseball has done since the institution of the designated hitter (which is the stupidest thing ever!) is deciding that the league that wins the All-Star game gets home field advantage in the World Series. The All-Star game is nothing but an exhibition game of popularly elected players. It was a way to allow fans to see the two league play each other in the middle of the season. Now, with interleague play the All-Star game doesn't even provide that. Other than tradition there is no reason to even hold the All-Star game anymore. MLB, kill this stupid rule. Home field advantage in the World Series should be awarded to the team with the best record.
