Experienced Hendrix
Last night a group of us went to a concert at the Chicago Theater. It was a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. It started at 7:30 and ran until almost 11:00.
It was worth every penny of the $50 I paid.
Some random observations.
1. One girl that went with us, she's in her mid to late 20s, didn't know anything about Hendrix. She asked a couple of funny questions. "Hendrix sang 'Purple Rain'? No, wait, that was Prince." "Did Hendrix invent the electric guitar?"
2. Something else I overheard. The bathroom I used had a door to the fire escape. A guy was out there having a smoke (a tobacco cigarette in this case). A conversation about smoking started and one guy said, "I smoked for 2 decades. I quit 14 years ago."
3. Which brings me to my next point. It was an OLD, OLD crowd. At 37 I was well below the average age. I would guess the average age was upwards of 50.
4. The crowd and the venue was not condusive to a lively concert. The guitarists were all good and some were awesome but looking around most people were sitting still. No one was standing. Very few heads were even bobbing. A different venue, like the Aragon, would have been much better. Then again, the older crowd may not show up at all without the seats.
5. Kenny Wayne Shephard played a 15 or 20 minute version of Voodoo Child. FUCKING AWESOME! Stole the show before the headliners came on.
6. Buddy Guy headlined and Hubert Sumlin played a couple of songs with him. Any time I can see Buddy play it's a good show.

I hate concerts where people just sit, and not stand at all, or make much noise.
A recent Willie Nelson concert that Iwanski and I attended was like that. I wanted to dance and clap and cheer, but I felt like I couldn't. People should feel more free at a concert--especially a Hendrix concert!!--you know??
I meant a Hendrix tribute concert, of course. :) Although it would be amazing to see the ghost of Hendrix come back for a concert! :)
