My Disfunctional Extended Family

It looks promising that I will be able to get World Series tickets if the Cards win the series against the Mets. That's a tall order but in the realm of possibility. To get the tickets though I have to buy tickets for all three home games in StL. That can be expensive both as a cost and an opportunity cost as I won't be paid.

So I called Mom last night. My Uncle Darryl has lived in the StL 'burbs forever and is a huge Cardinal fan. I wanted to offer him a chance at some extra tickets. Mom dropped a bomb shell. Uncle Darryl had died of complications from hip replacement surgery nearly 6 weeks ago! No body knew. Mom didn't. None of her other siblings knew either. Uncle Darryl's wife, Fern, didn't call and tell anyone. She assumed that my Aunt Rosetta would see the obit in the StL paper.

I'm not close to my any of my aunts, uncles or cousins. I haven't seen any from my Mom's side of the family since Grandma died in 1998. So this isn't really a crushing blow. I'm not broken up about it or anything. Still, when a person dies you think of your own mortality and that of others close to you. And it is family. I would have driven down to StL on very short notice to be with the family if it had just been related.
