What's With These Guys?

Rev. Ted Haggard, head of the 30 million strong National Association of Evangelicals and head of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs resigned his posts yesterday after a male personal trainer came forward and said Haggard had paid him for sex. Additionally, the man says Haggard took methamphetamines.

One has to assume there is some validity to the charges. If there wasn't Haggard should be fighting back. He should be filing a libel suit.

But what attracts closeted gay men to organizations that believe their lifestyle is immoral and should be illegal? What mental pathology allows them to campaign and preach against themselves? At one level this is utter hyprocrisy. But at some level it has to be society instilling the hatred of homosexuality in them (and others). These people are taught to hate themselves because others fear their behavior or find it icky.

At one level I want to feel sorry for guys like Mark Foley, the congressman who resigned recently because he was having on-line sex with young, male pages. His choice or partners certainly left a lot to be desired and may have been illegal but it can be argued (no proof to back this up) that he was forced into abnormal deviance because his sexuality was represessed by the people he associated with. I don't feel sorry for Haggard who publicly preached and campaigned against himself (assuming the accusations are true). I do hope that these scandals and others give the Democrats control of the U.S. House and hopefully the U.S. Senate after next Tuesday's elections. We need a check on the Bush Regime.
