Daddy Can't Fix This One
Is the Iraq War coming to an end?
Apparently there are any number of signs and it won't be anything the Democrats do. Because, ultimately, they can't do anything in this regard. Forget the fact that the Goppers have fillibusterd everything! Even if the Goppers allowed things to come to a vote, Bush would veto anything that harms his plans (or gives credit to the Democrats).
But what worries me even more is that Bush's ego won't even allow the army to draw down despite the Broken Army clock. There is not nearly enoughgood non-bad news coming out of Iraq to justify a claim of victory. That leaves Bush with three options to end the war:
I can't imagine #1 being used. But let's face it, Bush doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone but himself. He has made habbit of stabbing even his own party in the back this year. His continued warmongering and pushing the immigration reform bill have driven away many of of his party's members. Why not blame the military?
Number 2 is an option. It may be the only politically safe option. Blame the brown people that looked a gift horse (US) in the mouth.
Safe to say that #3 isn't on the table.
But what if Bush doesn't allow the draw down? There are still enough Kool-Aid drinkers that even with the defection of the moderates that a Bush veto of a bill to end the war is likely to be sustained. And as long as the Commander-In-Chief keeps the troops in theater Congress needs to provide the funding to keep them alive. According to the Broken Clock timeline that Joe Klein discusses there won't be enough troops available to maintain current levels by next summer. Unless, of course, deployments are extended beyond the current 15 months. I don't rule it out. I think it is entirely possible, even likely, that Bush will do everything he can to keep the war going until he is out of office leaving the disaster that is 100% his making for someone else to fix. It is what he has done his whole life. Why should his presidency be any different?

- Blame the military
- Blame the Iraqi government
- Accept defeat
