Sen. Lott Retiring

Before the end of the year.
No reason for Lott's resignation was given, but according to a congressional official, there is nothing amiss with Lott's health. The senator has "other opportunities" he plans to pursue, the official said, without elaborating.
...
Lott becomes the sixth Senate Republican this year to announce retirement.
...
The sudden departure of Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., may be linked to a new post-Senate career lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year.

The law bars Senators (and House members?) from being employed as a lobbyist for two years after leaving office. It is effective January 1.

Coincidence?
