Taste Of Chicago

UPDATE: Pictures included below.

We're coming up on the 4th of July and that means the Taste Of Chicago has taken over Columbus Drive in Grant Park. A couple coworkers and I went down for lunch yesterday. There are about 65 restaurants at the taste this year. Unless you go everyday you just can't try all of it and really, some of it why would you. just looking at the list in front of me right now I count 7 booths serving pizza, 6 selling beef or sausage sandwiches, and 5 more serving Mexican fare. Not that I have anything against those foods but there are so many more interesting things to eat that aren't common place across the city.

That being said the best way to enjoy the Taste is to order Taste Portions. Each restaurant that sets up a booth has three to 5 menu items available and each booth offers a small portion, a Taste Portion, of one of those items at about half price. I recommend getting a couple strips of tickets sampling as many Taste Portions as it takes to fill you up.

Yesterday I had:
  • Potato pierogies from Kasia's Deli
  • Vegetarian BBQ Twist from Soul Vegetarian East
  • Rice and beans w/ plantain and jerk chicken from Bolat African Cuisine

Bolat

Soul Vegetarian East

Kasia's

B.J. Market

Bolat is just a couple blocks from my soon-to-be condo. I think it might be a regular stop. And I really highly recommend trying something from Soul Vegetarian East no matter how contradictory that seems. My colleagues love the Mustard-fried catfish from B.J.'s Market and Bakery. I'm not into catfish and I've heard one dissenting opinion that there is too much breading.

I loves me some mustard fried catfish! Whoever said that about the breading is just wrong. :)

I haven't been to the Taste yet this year...but looking forward to it! :)

The critic is from Texas. You'll have to forgive his tastes.
