Death Over Life

Brian Nelson was not a nice guy. In fact, based on this Tribune story it sounds like he had some severe mental health issues. In the end, whatever was wrong with him, he killed four people and then burned the bodies. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection in 2006.

Recently on appeal the Illinois Supreme Court upheld his conviction but ruled the trial judge erred by removing a juror opposed to the death penalty. Nelson's sentence was changed from the death penalty to life in prison. Apparently Nelson chose not to spend the rest of his life in the general prison population and instead committed suicide last week.

But remember, the advocates of the death penalty will often tell you that life in prison is a softer sentence and letting the convicted off too easy. Brian Nelson who spent the last 4 years in prison disagreed.

I couldn't agree more. I am opposed to capital punishment, except in the cases of major warfare when a Nazi dictator needs to be stopped. War is different to me than the sanctioned killing of someone who *might* be innocent.
