Mexico Exposions

The Chicago Tribune is reporting a series of early morning explosions in Mexico City. Three bombs exploded and a fourth was disarmed by the police. One target was headquarters of the PRI political party.

Although the opposition is denying any responsibility the explosions seem aimed at those that won the national presidential elections earlier this year. The opposition candidate, Manuel Opez Obrador, former Mexico City mayor, vowed to set up an opposition government in protest. Hopefully this isolated to a few radical dissiedents and doesn't portend wider instability.

An unstable Mexico will not be good for the U.S. Mexico is our 3rd largest trading partner behind Canada and China. It is one the 2nd biggest supplier of crude oil to the U.S. surpassed only by Canada. If the economic relationship gets jostled the negative effects could hurt our teetering economy.

Additionally, an unstable homeland could force many more Mexicans to try to cross the border illegally. No matter what side of the immigration debate you come down on I think we can all agree that unchecked, illegal immigration is a bad thing. With stronger enforcement the illegals will be forced to more remote and more dangerous crossings and many more will die. Some extreme protectionists might thing that is a good thing but it is morally reprehensible to wish bodily harm on these people.

These Mexico City bombings and any fall out should be watched closely.
