More Than Slightly Confused

Last night I watched a rugby game (English league, I think) at the bar. There was no sound so it was just watching the action. I know very little about the sport.

There's The Scrum where a bunch of big, burly guys hug each other and butt heads. The Scrum seems to happen when there is a dead ball but I can't figure out when there is a dead ball.

There is what I call the "jump ball" where a guy throws in from the sideline and the one or more of the opposing teams hoists one of their own into the air in an attempt to catch it.
