8 Million People I'd Never Heard Of Before
The city of Chengdu. Wiki says the population is 11 million. This week, NPR said the city was 8M with the total metro area being either 11M or 12M. How many other people had never heard of this city before?
We learn of it this week because of the massive earthquake that has killed more than 12,000 people.
I've got nothing really profound or insightful to add to what others have said about this tragedy or the disaster that is Burma after the cyclone hit on May 3rd. It is just that I've always thought myself reasonably aware of geography and to "learn" of the existence of a city of 8 million people whose name doesn't even ring a bell kind of nonplussed me for a minute.

One of my coworkers grew up in Chengdu. I was surprised that I HAD heard of it.
Still, point taken. It's overwhelming sometimes to think of how huge our world really is. But it's kind-of comforting sometimes, as well--don't you think? I mean, why does it matter if I make a mistake, when there's about 6 billion other people also making mistakes? :)
