Today's Stat

6% and 21%

The average rise in the price of used small cars and the average decrease in price of used SUV's when comparing figures from May 2007 to May 2008, respectively.

That's just a blurb from this article on the woes facing the rental car industry in lieu of high gasoline prices. The high prices are changing all kinds of practices and affecting all the industries surrounding transportation.

Anecdotally, there are a lot more cyclists on the streets of Chicago. Ditto for scooters. I've heard reports that profits at auto body repair shops are way down. The loss is being blamed on people driving a lot less. The lower number of miles and lower number of accidents are translating into fewer injuries.

Yeah, I am actually kind-of happy about the high price of gas--as weird as that sounds, it has caused more people to bicycle and use public transit, and also buy smaller/more fuel-efficient cars.

A blessing in disguise?

Oh, yeah, and fewer accidents, too. Cool beans! :)
